In intermittent operation S3 with electromagnetic spring-applied brakes, operation takes place in recurring cycles of activation and pause phases, whereby the brake is switched on and off regularly. As the pauses are too short to achieve thermal equilibrium, the design of the brake must ensure that the heat generated during the operating cycles can be dissipated sufficiently to prevent overheating.
