Holding brake

Synonym(e) / Plural(e)
  • Safety brake

A holding brake or safety brake is a mechanical, hydraulic or electromagnetic device that is used in industrial applications - such as wind turbines, hoists or conveyor systems - to securely hold moving components in place when stationary. It prevents uncontrolled movements, e.g. due to wind load or gravity, and serves as a safety component to protect people and systems.

Holding brakes are often activated automatically or manually and operate independently of the main drive system. Holding brakes often work according to the fail-safe principle.
